serpentine crest sofa, circa 1790
New York or Philadelphia
Mahogany
Circa 1790
H: 41"; W: 82"; D: 31"
A beautiful sofa with a deep serpentine arched crest with outward scrolled arms on downswept supports. The serpentine seat sits on tapered square legs that terminate in spade feet and joined by square stretchers. This example is part of a small group that combine Chippendale elements with the later, transitional square tapered legs and spade feet. The exaggerated serpentine crest, the outward flare of the scrolled arms and the downward rake of the arm supports all reflect the drama of the Chippendale period. Very good condition.
