A profile portrait of Elizabeth Scholl (1800-1860) done in 1816 according to a handwritten family history on the reverse. She was born in New Oxford, PA and married John Barnitz of New Oxford in 1822 and had two sons. She is buried in the New Oxford Cemetery.
The artist Jacob Maentel emigrated from Germany to America in 1805 and earned his living as a portrait painter in Maryland and then in Lebanon, York and Dauphin Counties in Pennsylvania. He was a prolific artist painting more than two hundred portraits of friends and neighbors. He is known for his attention to detail in the subject's hair, face and dress and also, especially after about 1810, setting them in profile in a sparse landscape.
