Silver plate over copper; hand applied shanks.
1 1/8” diameter
Appears to be original leather, silk and velvet case.
The First New York Regiment was a militia regiment from Albany County that saw service in the Revolutionary War in Valley Forge and Yorktown. These buttons date to the period directly after the War and were inspired by fashionable French and British uniforms of the time. The buttons were worn on both lapels and meant to be decorative and actually closed with a hook and eye.
The State eagle crest and motto, “Excelsior” along with I REGT (for 1st Regiment) over a ribbon are inscribed on the plated front of the buttons. The reverse is unplated copper with a hand soldered shank.
