Built in 1861, the “Mack”, was owned by the Catskill Evening Line and ran evenings between Manhattan, Coxsackie and Hudson, New York. The steamboat was recognized by the carved Indian pilot house figure and this large propeller vessel was a familiar site on this route for many years. The boat was named after the noted naval architect, Thomas McManus. James Bard received numerous marine commissions during the ship building boom years between 1850 and 1880 in New York. His style was designed to please his patrons depicting the boats underway with flags waiving including a large one with the ship’s name. This painting is signed: J Bard Painter NY (1815-1897) and dates to 1872-73
In 1902 the McManus burned at her pier in New York.
