Hurlstone Fairchild was an illustrator, writer and painter of southwestern subjects. Initially a mining engineer, after spending long hours in the desert, he turned to painting to celebrate the desert landscapes. His later life was devoted to promoting the arts of the southwest, and he co-founded the Gallery of Southwestern Art in Tucson sometime in the 1950's. This example of Fairchild's work explores the colors and vastness of the desert and the dramatic cloud formations that pass over that land.
