architectural hanging eagle
American or English
Basswood, gesso, paint, iron
Circa 1825
58” x 24”
An early, monumental, carved eagle originally constructed to be hung from an arch or doorway. Appears to survive in its original surface of gilt over gesso. Basswood was used both in England and America for carving, so it is difficult to assign a specific provenance but the carving is skillfull and robust. Appears to retain original gilt surface.
